Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, in a custom binding, of Étienne Gilson's (1884-1978) most personal work, The Philosopher and Theology, first published by Fayard in 1960, accompanied by a handwritten letter and envelope from Gilson to Gabriel F. Forest dated March 21, 1960 (the year of the book's publication). After studying under Lucien Lévy-Bruhl and Henri Bergson, Gilson obtained his philosophy degree in 1906 from the Collège de France and completed his doctorate at the University of Paris after defending his dissertation on Descartes. Gilson would go on to teach medieval philosophy, among other subjects, at the University of Strasbourg, the University of Paris, and Harvard University. In 1929 Gilson was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and, together with fellow Thomist Jacques Maritain, received an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in 1930. Gilson is widely recognized as one of the twentieth century's greatest Thomists, and he spent much of his career elucidating and, in many respects, resurrecting the original thought and works of Saint Thomas Aquinas and Aristotle. In 1946 Gilson was elected an "Immortal" (i.e., member) of the Académie française and was later nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. In The Philosopher and Theology, Gilson undertakes the Delphic instruction to "Know Thyself" and charts his lifelong quest for God. In this, his most personal and autobiographical work, Gilson recounts his life's work and the uncertainties that he encountered along the way. This first edition appears to have been specially bound for presentation to Gabriel Forest with an accompanying inscription and letter and the original envelope. A unique first edition of Gilson's most intimate work. Octavo. Three-quarter leather and marbled boards with raised bands and gilt titling to spine; top-edge gilt; original paper wrappers preserved within this custom binding. Minor rubbing and scratching to leather; wear to leather at hinges, but hinges are sturdy. Pages bright. Neat pencil inscription by Étienne Gilson to Gabriel G. Forest. Accompanied by envelope addressed from "E. Gilson / Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies" to Gabriel Forest in Paris, France, together with a personal letter from Gilson to Forest (in French and neat blue ink) dated March 21, 1960 (the year of the book's first publication). Rare first edition in custom binding with personal letter from Gilson, one of the greatest philosophers and Thomists of the twentieth century. French language. Signed by Author(s).
