Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good +. First Edition. Square 4to. Pp. 266. Foreword by Wang Gungwu. Photo frontis. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs. Endpaper maps. Gray cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. Pictorial dust jacket, price-clipped. An Emily Dickinson poem (I Gained It So) has been transcribed in ink on the dedication page. Dedication to Henri Vetch, of Peking's French Bookstore. Morrison had the prescience to recognize traditional Chinese ways of life as endangered, beginning with Japanese occupation and exacerbated by the following civil war. The beauty of her vision was to document Peking life as is, and her prediction was fateful in that many of the occupations and pasttimes depicted here were disappeared during subsequent CPC rule. An artful and fascinating glimpse into a former magical place and time. Dust jacket is now protected in a clear, removable archival sleeve.
