First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 1st. Pictorial boards, 1 volume (unpaged), all illustrations; 29 x 46 cm. Beveled edges, top edge gilt. Shaken binding with a stain on the front board & a completely cracked front hinge. A few of the opening leaves are loose (laid-in), otherwise the binding is holding the rest of the book together. A possible candidate for rebinding. OVERSIZE! No priority/international, except by arrangement. Profusely illustrated with large-format classic pen-and-ink cartoons by American illustrator Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944), with plenty of "Gibson girls." Gibson seems to have visited the haunts of the Impressionists in Paris, too. (I count 86 very large illustrations, other bibliographic sources indicate 84. The plates are mostly clean, free of foxing, with the occasional faint stain or closed tear impinging on the margins). Size: Oblong.

The drawings of American society by Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944) defined the age contemporaneously and retrospectively from the 1890s through the early 1900s. His images of women, in particular, were so influential on the development of the American feminine style that the term "Gibson Girls" became part of the lexicon. Gibson was born 14 September, 1867, in Roxbury, Massachusetts. He was educated at Flushing High School and continued his training at the Art Students' League, New York. Gibson studied with Augustus Saint Gaudens and attended Julian's in Paris. His first cartoon appeared in the 25 March 1886 issue of Life. From that time, Gibson's cartoons appeared frequently in Life, Tid-Bits, and Time, and occasionally in Puck. This is just one of a large number of volumes published by Gibson that I am selling on this site each measuring 45 cms wide by 30 cms tall. Ref K4.
