While this difference resultsin occasional conflicts, it generally takes the formof avoidance and negative perceptions toward theother group. Both groups experience intergenerationaltension and may struggle with acculturation orassimilation. However, they experience thesepsychosocial issues differently. Immigrant Filipinoyouth face a difficult adjustment to their adoptedcountry including academic problems, while theirAmerican born and Americanized counterparts face acultural identity crisis. Survey data were collectedfrom 55 Filipino students from one Daly City,California high school. Their responses will helpinform social work practice with the Filipinopopulation in the United States and will addressissues of cultural competence when practicing socialwork interventions.
