"This book deals with the central problem of our civilization. Restless dissatisfaction with a society which plunges from prosperity to depression--which is characterized by chronic unemployment--in which there is little popular faith or spiritual enthusiasm, is now widespread. On the one hand, capitalistic liberalism is defective, while on the other we dislike the rigors of revolution. We watch keenly what goes on in Russia, but do not wish to tread the same path.".
