Full Leather. Condition: Good+ binding. Octavo. 484 pp., frontis, engraved title. In full sheep with decorative border in gold around the perimeter of the boards; spine gold tooled with a red morocco title label. Binding is quite rubbed with some peeling of the sheep; corners softened; near contemporary owner name in pencil; contents are erratically foxed, at times quite heavy; despite the flaws, the book presents very well on the shelf and remains stately.

To Which is Prefixed The Life of the Author, By Dr. Johnson, New Edition, Published by Chrissy & Markley, Philadelphia, 1852, 484 pp plus publisher's list, red & gilt blind stamped cloth, 9.5 x 6.25", 8vo. In good condition. Light wear to extremities with more moderate wear to corners especially bottom left corner of front board. Head and tail of spine have slight loss with bands exposed. Color remains vibrant, as does the gilt work! All edges gilt. End papers clean and bright. Ownership dated 1974 on second fly leaf of a Douglas Weir. Heavier foxing to preliminaries and frontispiece. Rear end papers are afflicted with heavy foxing as well. Text block lightly toned with areas of minor foxing. Free of known markings. Binding tight and intact. Please see photos. A finely bound compendium of the great Alexander Pope's poems with his life by Samuel Johnson.
