First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Text is in French. 603, [7] pages. Occasional footnotes. Bookplate of Montjoye inside front cover. Decorative endpapers. Cover worn. Some page discoloration and soiling noted. Gaston Esnault (born October 31, 1874 and died September 17, 1971) was a professor of education, associate of the University, and a lexicographer and specialist in linguistics and literature who published scholarly studies on slang in France, on the one hand, and on the Breton language and Breton literature, on the other hand. His interest in French slang, using all the resources of dialectology, enabled him to write a book and five articles in the Revue de philologie française and Le Français moderne which were notable contributions to argotology. Esnault published a dictionary of the slang of the French armies in 1914-1918, Le poilu, as he speaks, published in 1919, which is considered by Pierre Enckell, as "misunderstood and underused", while he conceals "hidden treasures". Montjoye--This most interesting surname is of French origin and is the Anglicization of a locational name from Montjoie in La Manche Normandy, France. Although the first recording is in the early 13th Century, it is likely that the name was introduced into Britain with the 1066 Conquest. The derivation is from the French "mont", a mountain, with "joie", joy. The first recorded spelling of the family name is that of Gilbert de Montgoye, which was dated 1219, Assize Rolls of Yorkshire, during the reign of King Henry III. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. Surnames in every country have continued to "develop". Military slang is an array of colloquial terminology used commonly by military personnel, including slang which is unique to or originates with the armed forces. In English-speaking countries, it often takes the form of abbreviations/acronyms or derivations of the NATO Phonetic Alphabet, or otherwise incorporates aspects of formal military terms and concepts. Military slang is often used to reinforce or reflect (usually friendly and humorous) interservice rivalries. A number of military slang terms are acronyms. Slang changes with the times, and the military is no different.

primaire edition. 8° 603 S. Halbleinen, Rücken goldgepägt, wenige Bleistiftanstreichungen, gues Ex., Name am Vorsatz. Sprache: Französisch, ----------------- Gaston Esnault (* 31. Oktober 1874 in Brest; gest.
