Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The boards on this volume have discoloration, e. g. a red streak that runs from top to bottom of the front board parallel to the fore edge, and what appears to be a stain to the rear board parallel to the edge of the back board. The boards and spine also appear a bit soiled and the spine darkened. The top edge blue/black dye appears to have faded and there is some light foxing to the fore edge. Internally, the pages are clean and bright, e. g. there are no pencil marks, pages with underlining or highlighting, and no marginalia. The book has a light odor to it. The gutter between the first and second free end paper is open, but the book remains tight. The colophon indicates this book was designed by W. A, Dwiggins. The story of this title was the basis on a movie of the same name. The dust jacket for this volume is not available. The copyright page has the date 1939 and what appears to be a second date has been blacked-out. The First Edition statement is present on the copy right page.
