Jean-Baptiste Charcot (1867-1936) was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine. He was a French scientist, medical doctor and polar scientist. In 1904, he was appointed leader of the French Antartric Expedition with the ship Le Français, exploring the west coast of Graham Land from 1904-1907. It is the region of Antartica that is closest to South America. From 1908-1910, he lead another expidition with the ship Le Pourquoi-Pas?, exploring the Bellingshausen Sea and the Amundsen Sea. He continued extensive exploring and discovering until he died in a shipwreck of the Le Pourquoi-pas? in a storm off the coast of Iceland in 1936.
