Seller: Ebeth & Abayjay Books, Lima, OH, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. This 140-page, 4 3/4" X 7" ex-college library offering in G condition is The Princess: A Medley by Alfred Lord Tennyson, an Eclectic English Classic published by the American Book Company in 1896. There is but one Illustration, by Artist Unknown, which is the Frontispiece sketch of the author-poet. Although an ex-college library copy, there are few of the standard markings to be seen. A previous owner/student has signed her name and address(which someone has later lined out) in ink, the endpapers front and back as well as the text's pages have yellowed somewhat, and there is some rather modest shelf wear at top and bottom edges of volume's spine. A most informative and helpful Introduction (helpful in interpreting/making sense of "The Princess", that is) precedes this long poem, and I believe that this Intro is the labor of one Stopford A. Brooke(who, I believe, is also responsible for the equally informative and useful footnote comments). This poem is, in a rather obtuse, roundabout manner, Tennyson's argument for the equal treatment of girls/women, primarily within the marriage, and at educational institutions, from the earliest levels to higher education. I myself have a real problem following Tennyson, and poets who write in styles similar to his. Perhaps, Reader, you'll have better success interpreting him. "The Princess: A Medley", for the record, consists of an Introduction, Cantos 1,2,3, and 4, an Interlude, Cantos 5,6, and 7, and, finally, a Conclusion. Check it out, and Good Luck, too!
