Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition -- early enough that Dutton identified later printings but no firsts. Second or third novel ("The Purple Sapphire" was 1924, "The Gold Tooth" was also 1927) by this author (actually a nom de plume for Scottish-born mathematician Eric Temple Bell, 1883-1960), generally classed as science fiction since it involves the invention of a machine which can inexpensively extract tons of gold from seawater, though the tale focuses more on the potential social and economic consequences: no space ships; no ray guns, no swooning damsels in conical brass brassieres. A fine original hardcover in orange boards with orange topstain, in a good-plus dust jacket with a large chip of about one inch square missing from bottom of rear panel. Under his own name, the author wrote "The Handmaiden of the Sciences" (1937), "Men of Mathematics" (1937), "The Last Problem," (1961), etc. 451 pp. Here reduced from $325.
