Soft cover. Condition: Very Good+. Mark Burckhardt; (illustrator). First Paperback Printings. 344, 344 pp. Both books have light rubbing on the corners with flat uncreased spines; no interior markings. Cover art by Mark Burckhardt. In The Rich and the Profane, it could only happen to Lovejoy. One minute a beautiful young girl is asking him how to steal a cheap necklace; the next he's jetting of to the Channel Isles, organizing "The Gamble of the Century" - and avenging a murder. And in A Rag et cetera, as a favour to a friend, Lovejoy braves London to find out who has been passing off fake gemstones to his fellow antique dealers. But when he visits the old friends who used to run Goldhorns' Chelsea Antiques Shop, he is in for a dreadful surprise, leading to a dangerous trail of avenging. Created by Ian La Frenais, Lovejoy was a British television series that ran from 1986 to 1994, starring Ian McShane, Dudley Sutton, Chris Jury, Phyllis Logan, Malcolm Tierney, Caroline Langrishe, Diane Parish, and a host of others, including Joanna Lumley for three episodes. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. States "First published 1999 by Macmillan." Number line complete 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 -- the first printing. Signed to the title page (name only.) These later entries in the series sometimes seem overly dependent on frenetic pace and a cast of characters that ought to merit a printed program, though Lovejoy's puckish voice, his antiques expertise, and his constantly stymied attempts to be a better crook and less of a soft touch, do retain their charm. In this one, Lovejoy meets young Mort, who can tell a real antique on sight . . . just like Lovejoy. Ian McShane starred in Ian La Frenais' moderately long-lived British TV series. 344 pp. Here reduced from $50. Signed by Author(s).
