First Edition
Handsomely bound in finely woven black cloth spine and red paper-covered boards both stamped brightly in gilt. Very clean and tight throughout. With 24 pages of black and white photos in the middle of the book. In a very good dust jacket with the original price of $16.95 at the bottom of the inside front flap. Light soiling along the top edges of the front and rear panel; sun-fading to the spine "Red &Hot" lettering which has turned yellow. With a lengthy presentation inscription by the author to BMI emeritus Edward Cramer (1925-2012): "For Edward Cramer, Who, at Michael's Pub in 1974, did much to bring the USSR back into the fold of international music, with the aid of Joe Venuti and Milt Hinton, no less! Fred Starr 1983." Inscribed in ink on the dedicatin page. "There s nothing quite like Red and Hot it s funny and tragic, serious and comic the story of jazz under the Commissars. Fred Starr s scholarship is impeccable and the story he puts together of the efforts of Stalin and his heirs to keep the Russians from substituting boogie-woogie and hard rock for the melancholy strains of the Volga Boatman is a minor epic." Harrison E. Salisbury "Written with vividness and a sense of humor Starr s account of the Russian infatuation with jazz-more intense and more informed with social significance than anywhere outside America is a remarkable work that transcends its apparently lightweight subject. " Newsweek First Edition with complete number line at the bottom of the copyright page.
