One of the scarcest of the Charles L. Webster Civil War Books. Winfield Scott Hancock (February 14, 1824-February 9, 1886) was a career U.S. Army officer and the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in 1880. He served with distinction in the Army for four decades, including service in the Mexican-American War and as a Union general in the American Civil War.Known to his Army colleagues as "Hancock the Superb", he was noted in particular for his personal leadership at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.One military historian wrote,"No other Union general at Gettysburg dominated men by the sheer force of their presence more completely than Hancock."As another wrote,"his tactical skill had won him the quick admiration of adversaries who had come to know him as the 'Thunderbolt of the Army of the Potomac'."His military service continued after the Civil War, as Hancock participated in the military Reconstruction of the South and the Army's presence at the Western frontier. Very scarce. .

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. This volume appears to have been rebacked quite some time ago. The original cover boards are present -- black cloth with a bright image of the 2nd Army Corp headquarters insignia on front center. About 5" of the original brown leather spine (rather worn) are attached to the rebacked material on the spine. The repair is very well done but possibly not professionally. The front free endpaper has a large corner clip -- possibly to remove a name. The title page has the signature of a Geo.(?) H. Hazzard. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 339 pages.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Hardcover. Ex-library, with associated markings. Once upon a time bound in 3/4 leather. It has since been repaired, with maroon cloth over spine, and gray cloth reinforcing gutters. Red, white, and blue shamrock outlined in gilt on front cover. Front and rear hinges are cracked, about two inches in length, at head of spine. Boards are exposed where leather has been worn and bumped. Covers feel a bit loosely attached, but binding of text block is secure. Title and copyright pages dated 1887. Rear free endpaper is wrinkled, but there's no other evidence of any water damage throughout. Pages remain quite clean and in good reading condition, free of marks or tears. Published by his wife just one year after Hancock's death, and seven years after his loss to James Garfield in the presidential election of 1880. Hancock was a war hero of The Battle of Gettsyburg, and went on to serve in military organizations until his death in 1886. Please email with any questions or to request photos.
