Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Original brown pebbled cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Cloth shows general soiling and wear. Spine faded; loss at spine ends; board corners exposed. Cloth cracked along front outer hinge, though inner hinges are intact and the binding is solid. Pages foxed. A few instances of pencil underlining on a couple of pages in the fist chapter, and one or two appearances of penciled marginalia elsewhere, otherwise unmarked. Small bookseller label on front pastedown for Scrantom & Wetmore Booksellers and Stationers of Rochester, N.Y. pp. 678, 200 [878 total]. 9.25 x 5.8 inches. Detailed descriptions from 1868 of the resources of the states west of the Rockies with a focus on mining and mineral resources, but also describing topography, population, water resources, agriculture, and industry. Largely arranged by county or state district, the material covers California (pp. 1-298), Nevada (299-442), and Arizona (443-481), and has briefer sections on Utah (482-486), Montana (487-511), Idaho (512-536), Washington Territory (537-575), Oregon (576-596), and Alaska (597-604). John Ross Browne's report was initially prepared in 1868 for Congress and was first published that November. It is here supplemented with the 77-page ''Historical Summary of Lower California from Its Discovery in 1532 to 1867'' by Alexander S. Taylor, four pages detailing the Lower California Colonization Company (1861), Browne's 40-page journal of exploration through Lower California, reports on further exploration by Capt. Charles M. Scammon, the expedition of the J. D. Hawks party, and Dr. John A. Veatch on Cedros Island, with an additional miscellany of related reports.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. New York, thick octavo, 678, 200 p., and tables. ***CONTENT: The title of this informative volume aptly describes its content. Understandably, much of the volume is devoted to the gold region of California and its mining operations. The author provides descriptions of the "mother lode", followed by county-by-county details of specific mines. Counties receiving special attention include Mariposa, Tuolumne, Calaveras, Amador, Placer, El Dorado, and several more. Hundreds of placer and hard-rock mines are noted within, with historical data and descriptions of workings and yield. Nevada is similarly described, with details on the Comstock Lode and Sutro Tunnel; other states considered include Arizona, Utah, Idaho, and Washington Territory. Especially instructive is Alexander Taylor's lengthy appendix report on Baja California: "Historical summary of Lower California, from its discovery in 1532 to 1867." ***CONDITION: This is a complete, VG copy in the original pebbled green cloth, with gilt lettering on the backstrip. The covers are sound, with minor edgewear; backstrip cloth with an inch-long chip, but the title lettering is complete and very legible. Joints just starting but strong, hinges solid, binding very firm. Save for a bit of scattered light foxing, the text pages are typically fresh, clean and bright. No evidence of previous ownership. This volume is an essential resource for information on the mineral resources of the far west. Nickles 144. BMNH 2172. International shipping will be extra for this volume, but only at my cost.

23.5 x 14.5 cm (large octavo), pp. [1-3] 4-678 [1-3] 4 [5] 6-200, flyleaves at front and rear, original dark green pebbled cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, front and rear panels ruled in blind, light yellow coated endpapers. Second, revised edition. First published as part of a preliminary 360-page government report, REPORTS UPON THE MINERAL RESOURCES OF THE UNITED STATES, BY SPECIAL COMMISSIONERS J. ROSS BROWN AND JAMES W. TAYLOR (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1867), this is a revised and expanded edition that covers western mining operations through 1866-1867. Some copies have the imprint of H. H. Bancroft and Company, San Francisco and others have the cancel title leaf of D. Appleton and Company, this being one of the latter. John Ross Browne (1821-1875) was a journalist, travel writer, artist, government agent and California Forty-niner whose CRUSOE'S ISLAND: A RAMBLE IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ALEXANDER SELKIRK. WITH SKETCHES OF ADVENTURE IN CALIFORNIA AND WASHOE (1864) was the model for Mark Twain's ROUGHING IT (1872). Browne wrote easily and was clever at caricaturing people and things about him. Browne's trip over the old Placerville Road took him to Virginia City, but he stayed there only a month. He described the town as a "mud hole . [with] no title to property and no property worth having." He said the Washoe mines were "nothing more than squirrel holes on a large scale, the difference being that the squirrels burrow in the ground because they want to live there, and men because they want to live somewhere else." "There are several reports that came from his pen while he was engaged in government service, among which RESOURCES OF THE PACIFIC SLOPE (1869) has been one of the most widely used . In 1870 he settled in Oakland, Cal., a place he had called 'home' since 1855, and entered the real estate business with offices in San Francisco, He was engaged in this at the time of his death . Browne had a keen sense of humor, was versatile, modest, good-natured, cordial, and generous." - DAB. Browne's fascinating career as a government agent is told in Richard Dillon's J. Ross Browne: Confidential Agent in Old California (Norman, OK: University of Oklahoma Press, 1965). Cowan (1933), p. 79. Light wear to spine ends and lower corner tips, but overall a remarkably fresh, nearly fine copy. Provenance: Contemporary printed book label of C. O. G. Miller affixed to the front paste-down along with later leather bookplates of collectors Daniel G. Volkmann and Michael Sharpe. Penciled marginalia by Miller regarding minerals on recto of rear flyleaf. (#164930).
