Illustrated with black-and-white photographs and drawings by Edwin William Krauter. FIRST CAROL PUBLISHING GROUP EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, 1992. "To many, Jack Johnson was the greatest boxer of all time. Had Jack Johnson been a white man, he would have attained an influence in the world which few other men have attained. But Jack Johnson was not. Because of his race, he had from the start the burden of prejudice to bear and to contend with conditions and human jealousies which in no way would ever have attached to a white man. When he successfully fought his way to the world championship, his achievement, instead of mitigating these prejudices and jealousies, intensified them. The story of Jack Johnson is a thrilling and interesting one, his career full of romance and adventure. This repirnt of an edition first published in 1927 is a memorial to a great American hero." -- from the rear outer cover.

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: good +. First Edition. Octavo, 259pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean, near fine copy in the publisher's red cloth. Just a touch of dust-soiling to the top edge, and the spine gilt a bit dulled. In a good or better dust jacket, creased and with a few challow chips and tears. The spine is a bit faded, with the price scuffed out in the middle of the spine. Still better than often found, and the jacket is almost always missing. Johnson, the first Black athlete to obtain international fame, was a very controversial figure in his day, having married three white women, and been unafraid of the public backlash during the height of Jim Crow segregation. This autobiography discusses both Johnson's boxing career and his personal life, and includes some laudatory essays by Damon Runyon (misspelled "Runyan"), his wife Irene, and several others.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition, First Printing. 259p. A hardcover book in very good condition with a like dustjacket. Light stain at bottom of front cover, affecting the same area of the front free endpaper. Pages lightly toned with age, but otherwise, text clean and binding tight. The jacket has some light edge wear and faint speckling on the spine and back panel. Otherwise intact and protected in a mylar cover. Much nicer condition than is normally found! The memoirs of the first African-American to hold the world heavyweight boxing title. Features multiple introductions, including one by author Damon Runyon, and illustrated with numerous black and white plates. Johnson was a highly controversial sports figure of his day. The first Black man to become the heavyweight boxing champion, he was roundly hated by the White public and sparked the cry for a "Great White Hope" to dethrone him. Johnson relished tormenting his detractors both by dominating the White fighters sent to defeat him and by creating public ire by wearing flamboyent clothing and jewelry and by marrying a White woman.
