Hardcover. Condition: Good. Color pictorial boards with red cloth spine. Small octavo. 31; 31 & 16 pp. Illustrated. An early anthology of 3 children's stories with charming engraved illustrations by Kaulbach and others. The book contains "The Robber Kitten" in which a young kitten takes to the woods armed with pistols and a sword and wreaks havoc with the denizens of the woods. He learns a valuable lesson when he meets a robber dog and eventually returns to his mother. This story has been attributed to R.M. Ballantyne, the Scottish writer of boy's stories. The next story is "Reynard the Fox" and is a short version of the medieval fable in which a cunning fox vies for power with the wolf Isegrim. The last story is "Precocious Piggy", a dark nursery rhyme by Thomas Hood concerning the exploits of a young pig who leaves home to pursue landscape gardening, drinking, dancing and other adventures before nearly meeting his fate on the butcher's block. There are great illustrations on every page of this story. In terms of condition this is a good copy only with wear to the spine tips and with chipping and wear to the edges of the covers. The rear cover has some soiling. The front color cover is quite bright and attractive. The inside hinges of the book are very worn but still intact. The text is quite soiled and worn but in decent condition nonetheless. A scarce children's book with great illustrations.
