Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Short foreword by Eleanor Roosevelt. Laid in is a typed letter addressed to Basil O'Connor dated January 30, 1953 acknowledging the receipt of this book by Will H' Hays' secretary, assuring Mr. O'Connor that once Mr. Hays returned from a trip in the West that she would personally hand him the book. Basil O'Connor[ was an American lawyer who, in co-operation with President Franklin D. Roosevelt started two foundations for the rehabilitation of polio patients and the research on polio prevention and treatment, The Georgia Warm Springs Foundation and the Natl. Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. From 1944 to 1949 he was Chairman and President of the American Red Cross and from 1945 to 1950 he was Chairman of the League of Red Cross Societies. Rear panel of dustjacket features a photo of the author with Basil O'Connor. This book purchased from the estate of Will H. Hays, most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire, inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts, and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. When the Catholic Church formed its Legion of Decency and threatened nationwide boycotts of movies, Hays installed a more formal production code, called the Hays Code( later simply "The Code"), which became the virtual law of Hollywood until the 1960s. Book is Near Fine, top edge slightly dusty, in a Very Good dustjacket, faded at the spine and with small chips at spine tips. Association Copy.
