Kindheit und Jugend: Knut Hamsun wurde 1859 als viertes von sieben Kindern der Kleinbauern Peder Pedersen and Tora Olsdatter geboren, mit bürgerlichem Namen hieß er Knud Pedersen. Sein Vater war zusätzlich als Dorfschneider tätig. 1863 zog seine Familie nach Hamarøy in Nordland um und kaufte dort den Hamsundhof, von dem sich der spätere Name des Schriftstellers ableitet. Die in vielerlei Hinsicht rückständige, fast feudale Gesellschaft mit ihren patriachalischen Beziehungen zwischen Herren und Untergebenen haben wohl Hamsuns konservative Grundeinstellung mit bedingt. Als Neunjähriger kam er für mehrere Jahre als Pfand für die Schulden der Eltern zu seinem Onkel Hans Ohlsen in Presteide, um im Pfarrhof aus dem Bibelboten vorzulesen. In seiner Erzählung Bjørger verarbeitete er Teile dieser Zeit, die er rückblickend als Martyrium bezeichnet. Später, nach seiner Konfirmation, war er bei dem Kaufmann Walsøe in Tranøy als Ladengehilfe beschäftigt und bekritzelte die Türrahmen des Ladens mit ersten Versen. 1875 begab er sich auf Wanderschaft durch Norwegen, um das Land kennenzulernen, und arbeitete als Hafenarbeiter, fahrender Händler und auch als Gemeindeschreiber. .
