A good plus, internally clean and sturdy hard cover edition with moderate exterior soiling and shelf wear with rubbing at the corners; hinges and binding solid, paper lightly yellowed, with foxing to the fore-edges. (2) : Xii + 157 + 28 (advt.) pp., engrv. frontis + many cuts & diagrams. Both bound together in late 19th c. full black calf; gilt; blind tooling to covers; speckled edges. 18 x 11cm. Crayon marks to blank verso of first title-page & very lightly to two engraved diagrams pp. 10 & 11; first volume lacks an advert sheet (advert. pp. 29/30) o/w V.G. (The tail of spine bears the name in gilt letters E. H. Williams. The ‘second’ book is inscribed "Evans Herbert Williams, Llanwnda, Carnarvonshire, North Wales. Aged 24. 1873." The ‘first’ book gives another address in Llanwnda for E. H. Williams dated 1886.). The author Robert Kipping, was a Sailmaker who worked on the quayside at Newcastle-on-Tyne having previously gone to sea in that capacity in square-riggers. His first work is divided into two parts, each sub-divided into two sections. Part I Section I contains 4 chapters and covers: On Description and Use of Sails. On Measuring. Rules for finding the Number of Cloths. On finding the Quantity of Yards in Sails. Part I Section 2 also has 4 chapters: On Cutting-out Sails. General Rules and Instructions for making Sails. Practical Operations in Sailmaking. On Fore-and-Aft Sails. Part II Section I has two chapters: Masting, Rigging, and Sails of Steam-vessels. On Boat Sails. Part II Section II also has two chapters: On Draughts and Centre of Effort of the Sails. On the Centre of Effort. In addition there are tables and a detailed appendix. The book is illustrated with numerous woodcuts etc. The second work is a rudimentary guide to the Practice of Masting, Mast-making, and Rigging of Sailing Ships and contains 14 chapters. These describe equipping a ship with three masts and a bowsprit. The timbers used for masts. The proportions for the rake. Mast-making with various parts for various types of vessels. Bowsprits and Jib-booms. Yards of every type for merchant ships. Masting merchant ships. The art of rigging. To put a strand in a rope and various knots. Ships’ blocks of very type. Standing and running rigging with all the various parts. Rigging sheers. Rigging the jib-boom. Rigging the fore and main yards. Rigging various types of sailing vessels. Etc., etc. An appendix provides dimensions of masts and yards of H. M. Ships. Again, the book is illustrated with many woodcuts, etc., plus an engraving showing the masts, yards and rigging of a British full-rigger. These books were first published in the early 1850’s and continued in print until well after the First World War to the end of the era of sail.
