Smith at North Shields, builders of the Blackwall frigate "Blenheim" (D.R.MacGregor).

Original edition, not a modern reprint. Limp cloth, small 8vo,150 pp. + 12 pp. publisher's catalog of Virtue Brothers & Co. Highly tooled cloth covers with printed label on front cover. Frontispiece of a sailing ship on stiff paper. This is foxed on the blank side, otherwise the book is free of foxing. Contemporary owner's inscription on front blank, name followed by Watford, 1863. Small later New York City bookseller's label on back pastedown endpaper of Caravan Book Service, Books of the Sea, and next to it a purchaser's initials and date of purchase (1954). The same individual put his nautical-themed bookplate with name written out in full in pen on the front pastedown. Illustrated with numerous woodcuts showing knots, tackle, etc. besides masts. A nice clean copy.
