(nach eigener Angabe 10.10.) 1777, (Selbstmord) am Kleinen Wannsee (heute zu Berlin) 21.11. 1811, ältester Sohn eines preußischen Hauptmanns und Großneffe von Ewald Christian Kleist. Früh verwaist, trat er 1792, der Familientradition gemäß, in das Potsdamer Garderegiment ein und machte 1794 den Rheinfeldzug mit. Er quittierte 1799 den ungeliebten Dienst, um sich einem selbst aufgestellten »Lebensplan« zu widmen: Er verlobte sich mit Wilhelmine von Zenge (*1780, 1852) und begann in Frankfurt (Oder) das Studium der Physik, Philosophie, Mathematik und Staatswissenschaften, das er schon 1800 abbrach. Die »Kantkrise« (1801), das Zerbrechen seines rationalistischen Weltbildes und die damit verbundene Hinwendung zu Subjektivismus und Irrationalismus, bezeichnet die endgültige Wendung Kleists von der Wissenschaft zur Dichtung. Einer von der Familie gewünschten Anstellung im Staatsdienst entzog er sich 1801 durch eine Reise mit der Stiefschwester Ulrike von Kleist (*1774, 1849) nach Dresden und Paris. Anschließend reiste Kleist allein weiter in die Schweiz, wo er mit H. Zschokke, L. Wieland und Heinrich Gessner (*1768, 1813) in freundschaftliche Verbindung trat. Kleist bezog 1802 (das Verlöbnis war aufgelöst worden) ein Häuschen auf der Aare-Insel bei Thun und begann die Arbeit an den Trauerspielen »Die Familie Schroffenstein« (1803) und »Robert Guiskard, Herzog der Normänner« (unvollendet, 1808 in seiner Monatsschrift »Phöbus« gedruckt). Auf Einladung von C.M. Wieland verbrachte Kleist den Winter 1802/03 auf dessen Gut Oßmannstedt bei Weimar, wo er u.ya. Goethe und Schiller begegnete, dann auch in Dresden dem Satiriker J.D. Falk, dessen Arbeit am Amphitryonstoff Kleist zu »Amphitryon, ein Lustspiel nach Molière« (1807) anregte. Kleists zweites Lustspiel, »Der zerbrochne Krug« (gedruckt 1811), entstand aus einem Wettstreit unter Freunden. Erneute Reisen führten ihn 1803 u.a. nach Paris. Dort kam es aufgrund seines labilen seelischen Zustands zur Krisis und zum Zusammenbruch (Brief an Ulrike vom 5.10.: »Ich kann nicht mehr«). Kleist verbrannte sein »Guiskard«-Manuskript und wanderte, von Selbstmordgedanken gequält, an die französische Nordküste, um in Napoleons I. Landungskorps gegen England »den schönen Tod der Schlachten zu sterben«. Er wurde jedoch nach Paris zurückgebracht und nach Deutschland abgeschoben. Nach schwerer Erkrankung (in Mainz) bewarb Kleist sich im Sommer 1804 in Berlin um Anstellung im preußischen Finanzdepartement und kam danach als Diätar an die Domänenkammer in Königsberg (heute Kaliningrad), wo er erneut sein Studium aufnahm; doch ließ er sich im Sommer 1806 krankheitshalber beurlauben und schrieb intensiv an seinen Dichtungen. Auf dem Weg nach Dresden (1807) wurde er in Berlin unter Spionageverdacht von den Franzosen verhaftet, zum Fort de Joux und dann in das Gefangenenlager Châlons-sur-Marne gebracht, aus dem er erst sechs Monate später nach dem Frieden von Tilsit entlassen wurde. Im kulturell aufblühenden Dresden, im Kreis von A.H. Müller, Otto August Rühle von Lilienstern (*1780, 1847), G.H. Schubert, K.F. G.Wetzel, K.A. Böttiger, Ferdinand Hartmann (*1774, 1842), G. von Kügelgen, C.G. Körner und L. Tieck begann Kleists fruchtbarste Schaffensperiode. Mit Müller, der zuvor den »Amphitryon« herausgegeben hatte, redigierte er die anspruchsvolle Zeitschrift »Phöbus« (einziger Jahrgang 1808), in der u.a. Proben der Dramen »Penthesilea« und »Das Käthchen von Heilbronn, oder Die Feuerprobe« sowie der Erzählungen »Die Marquise von O.« und »Michael Kohlhaas« erschienen. Noch im selben Jahr verlegte J.F. Cotta das Amazonendrama »Penthesilea«, dessen Übersteigerungen die Zeitgenossen, nicht zuletzt Goethe, schockierten. Auch die durch Goethe angeregte Aufführung von »Der zerbrochne Krug« in Weimar (1808) wurde ein Misserfolg.
