Condition: Fine. Today, the San Diego Zoo is the most visited zoo in the United States, but it got off to an inauspicious start as the dumping grounds for exotic animals left over from the 1915 Panama-California Exposition (held in Balboa Park) and from the defunct Wonderland Amusement Park. This map reflects the zoo as it appeared in the middle of the 1960's, with a distorted scale meant to emphasize the animals and exhibits. The latter is of note, as the zoo was a pioneer in cageless exhibits meant to represent the animals' natural habitats. Anyone who has visited the zoo knows about its significant elevation changes and the topographical information is cleverly distorted in the image so as not to dissuade any potential visitors from the impending hike. The Skyfari, the gondola that traverses the park, wouldn't be installed until 1969. The mesas and canyons that comprise the park are listed with their animal attractions alongside locations of restaurants, souvenir stands, bathrooms and information booths. On the verso is a bird's eye view of Balboa Park and small scale map of downtown San Diego, in addition to a space where you can write about your trip and affix a stamp to the souvenir mailer. Sheet Width (in) 22 Sheet Height (in) 16.5 Condition Description The map is in excellent condition, with minor wear along the originally issued fold lines.

Condition: Fine. This abstract image leans more heavily into the realm of artistic design than one of practical use. Animals are depicted in an exaggerated, stylistic form and appear overly dramatized with their emotions - a sly hyena, placid koala, and cheeky ostrich are just a few examples of over fifty different illustrated species. In addition to showcasing the diversity and beauty of its inhabitants, the map also provides some helpful information for the zoo itself. Paths, including moving walkways, are shown zigzagging throughout, and locations of restrooms, souvenir shops, food stands, drinking fountains, picnic areas, and information booths are depicted and listed in the legend. On the verso is a similarly designed map of the Children's Zoo, which opened in 1957 on 1.5 acres of additional land from Balboa Park, as well as a more useful map for navigating the zoo's mesas and canyons. Designed by R. Kinyon (artist's signature on the verso) and lithographed in San Diego by Frye & Smith. Sheet Width (in) 22 Sheet Height (in) 16.5 Condition Description Moderate creasing and faint wear along originally issued fold lines. Scattered wear and soiling on the verso does not affect the image. Very good overall.
