Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Hermannsburg, the home of artist Albert Namatjira and of other well-known painters, became Groom's headquarters, and from there he made numerous expeditions into wilder and more inaccessible regions. Travelling on foot with an Indigenous guide and a team of camels, Groom explored the Macdonnell and Krichauff ranges, the desert country past the salty Lake Amadeus, Uluru and the Olgas. Based on the notes and photographs he took as he travelled, I Saw A Strange Land is Groom's wonderful record of his extensive journey through the heart of the continent. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good binding. Large 8vo.; in the publisher's red cloth, binding D, with the title shortened on the upper board and the spine to "The Land of Oz" printed in deep navy blue with metallic-silver outlining and with the author's name moved to the lower right corner; the spine vignette has metallic silver embellishments added; and with the ambersand on the spine imprint changed to the "Fancy" style.~~On the copyright page the last typeset line reads "Published July, 1904"; the illustration facing page 23 is captioned "OLD MOMBI PUTS JACK IN THE STABLE"; with Jack Pumpkinhead embossed on the rear board.~~There are 16 full color plates. One plate, facing page 204, ["The Gump Soared Swiftly and Majestically Away"] is a very little bit rough long the leading edge; perhaps it was detached at some point and has been tipped back in [not by us]. The pictorial endpapers have photographs from life posed by comedians Montgomery and Stone. Some of the plates have some minor toning.~~There is a previous owner name stamped on the front endpaper, and in blue pencil "IInd". The binding is slightly cocked and has some trivial wear.~~Overall a nice copy of this Second Printing. (Bienvenue 23; Hanff 46-47). Very Good binding.
