First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Spine slightly faded and worn. Interleaved copy, apparently the author's own, with a pencilled note on the front free endpaper (quotation from "An Italian officer apropos of the British troops in Italy") and pencilled corrections on pp.[xi], 110, 112, 129, 130, 131, 132, 133, 137 and 211; loosely inserted a printed sheet of press opinions - "An incomparable description of our many theatres of War. Rich with colour and understanding and full of real sympathy with the men of all the Allied Armies who are fighting our battles" (Army and Navy Gazette); "This book, packed from end to end with good writing, belongs to the standard literature of the War" (British Weekly); "An exceptional book of character and atmosphere. Matters are viewed from a standpoint that is essentially that of the best minds. People will turn back to it many years hence to discover the spirit of the great times in which we are now living" (The Daily Graphic) . . . Born in India, in Amritsar, Vincent Clarence Scott O'Connor (1869-1945) exchanged a career in the Indian Civil Service for travel writing, after the success of his book The Silken East: a record of life and travel in Burma (1904). He settled in England just before the war and The Scene of War offers journalistic snapshots of the (mostly) European theatre. "And here we are at the headquarters of General Haig, commander of the greatest army the British race has ever put into the field. You might expect a stir and movement in this neighbourhood . . . There is nothing of the kind. The Chateau in which the General is lodged is half a farmhouse; its most notable feature a vast semicircle of granaries and haylofts and stables for cattle and horses. A single sentry stands at the gates . . .".
