Dust jacket very light shelfwear, now protected in archival quality sleeve. ; 649 pages; Jacobs writes briefly and entertainingly of his early life in New York and New Jersey, his studies at Rutgers and Duke universities, and his early industrial career, which eventually led him into the military industrial establishment during World War II. Subsequently, he launched the Jacobs Instrument Company, contracting with the U. S. Military over several decades and inventing and developing such items as guided missile range instrumentation, magnetic core random access memory for digital computers, and the first analogue-to-digital converter. He was known as the "father of optical engineering" and was honoured by the creation of the Donald H. Jacobs chair in applied physics at Rutgers. Along the way, however he learned of and experienced intrique and treachery in the U. S. Navy's weapons-development program, tells here - this is the main thrust of the book - how it affected developments in World War II and resulted in numerous lawsuits. ; Signed by Author. A landmark expose of intrigue and treachery in the U.S. Navy's weapons development program. With an extensive technical background, author opened The Jacobs Instrument Company, in a suburb of Washington, D.C., and conceived and developed for the Navy a bombing system (electronic bombsight), known as the Bomb Director System Mark 6, and also as the AN/ARB-1. His experiences with this company form the bulk of this autobiography. Although powerful forces wished to suppress it, he fought for this vital weapon program during the Korean War in spite of overwhelming threats and pressures from big business, the U.S. Navy, several Senate and House Committees, and a variety of state and Federal Courts. The whole story was swept under the rug by the press. He was eventually destroyed, but not before he had flushed out the character of modern scientific weapons research.
