ABOUT THIS BOOK: Scientists and Amateurs: A History of the Royal Society by Dorothy Stimson is a comprehensive account of the Royal Society, one of the oldest and most prestigious scientific organizations in the world. The book traces the history of the society from its foundation in 1660 to the present day, highlighting the key figures and events that have shaped its development.Stimson explores the role of the Royal Society in promoting scientific research and education, and examines the contributions of both professional scientists and amateur enthusiasts to the society's work. She also looks at the social and political context in which the society operated, and considers the impact of wider cultural and intellectual trends on its activities.Throughout the book, Stimson draws on a wide range of primary sources, including the society's own archives and publications, to provide a detailed and engaging account of this fascinating institution. Whether you are a scientist or simply interested in the history of science, Scientists and Amateurs offers a compelling insight into the evolution of scientific thought and practice over the past four centuries.(Publisher).
