Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Major H. De Grandmaison (illustrator). Limited First Edition. Blue cloth on beveled boards, with gilt lettering and decoration to spine and gilt decoration to front board. Both volumes have a little rubbing to edges, with slight 'show-through' at corners, and top and bottom of spine. Book plate of previous owner - Mandell Creighton inside cover of both volumes. Mandell Creighton (1843 - 1901) was a British historian and a bishop of the Church of England. It was believed that he was destined to become the Archbishop of Canterbury, but his early death prevented this. Hinges cracking on Volume 1, but secure. A little browning in places of both volumes, mostly associated with 'leeching' from the engravings through the tissue guards to the opposing text pages. This scarce first edition is limited to 312 copies, of which this is No. 125. The first volume of 195 pages, plus advertisements, has two parts, 1. Scottish Troops in the Service of France, and 2. The Privileges of the Scots Men-At-Arms and Scots Guards and The Costume of the Scots Guards. The second volume, of 232 pages plius advertisements, has one part (listed as Part III) Lists and Muster Rolls of the Life-Guards. Both volumes are lavishly illustrated with amazing, tissue protected, etched plates by Major H De Grandmaison. All plates and vignettes are present, together with a facsimile Muster Roll. These two volumes weigh in excess of 3kg and, as such, will incur additional carriage charghes for non UK customers.
