Collated, complete with 7 plates; including a folding map frontispiece, 3 single page illustrated plates, 1 folded illustrated plate, and 2 folded map plates. This copy contains the author's signature and dedication to the remaining free-endpaper: 'Mr. Hawthorne Kitson With very kind regard from the author R L Playfair [signature] 22 September 1884.' Written by Sir Robert Lambert Playfair, a British diplomat and author, 'The Scourge of Christendom' provides a record and history of Algiers, examining the struggles and revolutions for and within the city, primarily centering on British relations with the state. In the full publishers' original cloth binding with gilt stamped engraving of sil boat to front board. Black stamped border to front board, blind stamped border to rear. Gilt stamped title to spine. Externally, generally smart. Spine faded from maroon to pale brown. Fading to upper edge of front and rear board. Bumping and rubbing to head and tail of spine. Splits to head and tail of spine.
