Joseph-Aimé Péladan, dit le Sar Mérodack, né à Lyon le 28 Mars 1858, et mort à Neuilly-sur-Seine le 27 Juin 1918, est un écrivain, critique d'art et occultiste français. Issu d'une famille de cultivateurs et de commerçants, Joseph-Aimé Péladan, qui se donnera plus tard le prénom de Joséphin, est le fils de Louis-Adrien Péladan, journaliste, et de Joséphine Vaquier. En 1888, initié par Papus et Stanislas de Guaita, il entre dans la première loge martiniste à Paris, rue Pigalle, mais n'y reste pas longtemps. C'est à son frère Adrien, l'un des premiers homéopathes français, que Joséphin Péladan devrait son entrée dans une branche toulousaine de la Rose-Croix. En 1888, Péladan fonde avec Stanislas de Guaita l'Ordre de la Rose-Croix kabbalistique qui accueille aussi Papus et Charles Barlet. Prétextant un refus de la magie opérative, il se sépare du groupe en 1891 pour fonder l'Ordre de la Rose-Croix catholique et esthétique du Temple et du Graal. L'essai Le Secret des Troubadours. De Parsifal à Don Quichotte a été publié à Paris en 1906. Cet ouvrage comprend quatre essais révélant les liens existant entre les hérésies, l'art médiéval, Parsifal et les romans de chevalerie, les chants troubadours et Don Quichotte. Il n'a été tiré de cet ouvrage que 19 exemplaires sur grands papiers. Celui-ci est un des 7 (n°2) sur Japon avant 12 sur Hollande. Manque à Caillet, Dorbon aîné et Guaita. Joséphin Péladan (Lyon 1859-Neuilly-sur-Sein e1918) fut l'une des figures les plus célèbres de l'occultisme de l'époque symboliste. Il passa son enfance dans une atmosphère mystique sous l'influence de son père et de son grand frère. Il fut renvoyé de son lycée pour avoir traité un professeur d'athée puis du petit séminaire de Nîmes. Employé au crédit Faillelle à Paris, il rencontre Léon Bloy, Paul Bourget et Barbey d'Aurevilly qui préface son roman Le Vice-suprême, premier volume d'une "éthopée" (tableau de moeurs) en 21 volumes intitulée La Décadence latine, publiée entre 1884 et 1925 (1884 et 1900 pour les 20 premiers volumes). Péladan fut en 1888 le co-fondateur, avec Stanislas de Guaita de l'Ordre kabbalistique de la Rose-Croix pour rapidement faire sécession et créer son propre ordre rosicrucien uniquement catholique. Il inaugura à partir de 1892 les premiers Salons de la Rose-Croix qui remportèrent un grand succès. Péladan était alors considéré comme un visionnaire attirant à lui le Tout-Paris. Les Salons de la Rose-Croix associés à la publication de nombreux romans, pièces de théâtre et critiques d'art obéissaient au même projet esthétique : la rénovation de l'art par le sacré. Cependant, une trop grande dispersion associée à des extravagances vestimentaires finirent par lasser le public et Péladan devient le plus souvent objet de railleries. A la fin des années 1890, il était déjà presque oublié. Bel exemplaire.
