"Prosper Mérimée schuf 1847 mit der Figur der spanischen "tanzenden Zigeunerin" Carmen - stark, impulsiv, eigensinnig, exotisch - eine Frau, an der sich Schicksale entzünden, und einen Charakter, der die Künste inspirierte. Georges Bizet schrieb auf Basis der Novelle seine gleichnamige weltberühmte Oper. Aber auch in den Werken von Edouard Manet, Gustave Courbet oder Nadar hinterließ sie ihre Spuren, Männer von Nietzsche bis Adorno konnten sich ihrem Mythos nicht entziehen. Dabei sagt diese Frauenfigur in ihrer zunehmenden Folklorisierung und Klischeebefrachtung wahrscheinlich mehr über den Blick der Männer auf sie aus, als über diesen Frauentypen an sich. Mérimée selbst wagte es, seiner Novelle folgendes Motto voranzustellen: "Jede Frau ist bitter wie Galle; aber sie hat zwei gute Augenblicke, den einen im Bett, den anderen bei ihrem Tod." Der Band zeichnet die Entstehung der Carmen nach, untersucht inwiefern ihre Sinnlichkeit und Leidenschaft die männliche Ordnung in Frage stellt und verfolgt sie durch die bildenden Künste von Goya bis Picasso.
