Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 2nd Printing. Hardback. The Sense of Shakespeare's Sonnets. Previous owners name and date to inside cover. Shelf wear and a couple of small tears to edge of D/J. Slight browning to spine of D/J. Although Shakespeare's sonnets have been the onbject of endless investigation and controversy, primarily as a source of biographical information, little crtitical attention has been paid them as poems. Their content has not been taken too seriously and has often been dismissed as of little interest. The author here seeks to dispel the notion that the sonnets were the beautiful but empty elaboration of conventional matter. He sets out to discover what the sonnets say, and reveals that Sheakespeare's mind found constant expression in them and that his developing thought fits into the larger context of his thought in the plays. The flashings and probings of the young Shakespeare's mind are revealed in his lyric expression of his perceptions of friendship of love and lust, of growth through experience, of sin and expiation, of his notions of mutability, plenitude, and reputation, of poetry and the craft of the writer. These are the ideas which this book is concerned, and Mr. Hubler's gracefully written study provides a fresh and enlightening approach to familiar poetry. 169 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
