Very attractively bound in finely woven green cloth stamped brightly in silver on the spine. Very clean and tight throughout with scattered foxing to the fore-edges. In a complete pictorial dustjacket designed by Robin Ray with the original price of "15s.net" at the bottom of the inside front flap. Splendid photo of Knowles on the rear panel. Foxing along the edges of the front and rear flaps adjacent to the spine folds. Very light chipping only to the top of the spine ends. Splendid front and rear panels. Laid in is a signed/presentation inscription in Knowles' hand on heavy stock: "To Adeline Oakley--With thanks and all best regards--John Knowles, Boston, April 12, 1978" written in bright black ink. A Separate Peace was first published in London by Secker and Warburg in 1959. The novel was published in New York in 1960 by Macmillan. Knowles's other significant works are Morning in Antibes, Double Vision: American Thoughts Abroad, Indian Summer, The Paragon, and Peace Breaks Out. None of these later works was as well received as A Separate Peace. As a resident of Southampton, New York, Knowles wrote seven novels, a book on travel, and a collection of stories. He was the winner of the William Faulkner Award and the Rosenthal Award of the National Institute of Arts and Letters. In his later years, Knowles lectured to university audiences. Knowles died in 2001, at the age of 75 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
