Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. (1984). First Edition, xxvi, 690pp, index, illustrated. G+ in G+ lightly chipped dj. Inscribed and signed by the author on the title page to the previous owners. Merton had been cloistered at Gethsemani Monastery in Kentucky, turning out his poetry, but going largely unnoticed by the public at large, until the publication of THE SEVEN STOREY MOUNTAIN in 1948. That book made him instantly famous and he could never escape his celebrity status after that, which he often complained about and tried to downplay. He was, in fact, very worldly and down to earth, and in many respects much like the rest of us. The main difference, obviously, was his never ending curiosity about the religious aspect of man's nature, and the ability to write about it in ways that appealed to his many readers, who could find something in his books that they couldn't find in their day to day lives. If you are expecting only a wise, saintly figure as the subject of Mott's biography, you are in for a surprise.
