Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. No writer in the English language has so perfectly wedded the horrific with the literary, the thrilling with the provoking, or the profane with the spiritual as Robert Louis Stevenson. His Gothic masterpiece Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde has left unfathomable impressions on the fabric of our cultural self-understanding, stamping its heavy foot tread in drama, film, and our language, and leaving a twisted labyrinth of psychological, ethical, and social alleyways for readers to ponder decades after it first effected the way we understand ourselves and the balance between public acceptance and private desires. In an age when social media has left the gap between a manicured image and internal reality wider than ever before, Jekyll and Hyde speaks to our desperation to be validated and our conflicting hunger to live freely without consequence. In this illustrated and annotated volume of Stevenson's best horror stories -- including the only available English translation of "Thrawn Janet," Stevenson's terrifying story of possession and witchcraft -- you will find corpses that violate space and time, Satanic doppelgangers, homicidal treasure hunters, jealous ghosts, erotic vampires, unspeakable family curses, and much more. TALES INCLUDED in this ANNOTATED EDITION: The Merry Men - Thrawn Janet - The Body Snatcher - Markheim - Olalla - The Bottle Imp - The Waif Woman - Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Seller: My Dead Aunt's Books, Hyattsville, MD, U.S.A.
Condition: Good. Present are 8 volumes of a possible 10 volume set; because volume 1 is missing, bibliographical information is scant. It is a beautiful edition, half-bound in leather with gold-veined marbled boards, TEG and gilt lettering on spines, but it is not the "Deluxe" limited ed. of 1908. Gauffered edges suggest it to be a kind of first ed. The volumes are not numbered on spine or within. The titles in the first un-numbered volume, chosen as first because of frontis. portrait of the author, are: "'Virginibus Puerisque' and Other Papers," "Memories and Portraits," and "Familiar studies of Men and Books; " the next volume comprises: "Treasure Island," and "Black Arrow;" the next is entitled, "The Wrecker;" next comes "An Inland Voyage'" "Travels With A Donkey," "The Amateur Emigrant," "The Silverado Squatters," and "Across the Plains with Other Memories and Essays," the next volume includes "St. Ives," "The Misadventures of John Nicholson," "The Story of a Lie," and "The Body Snatcher;" the following contains "The Wrong Box," "Island Nights Entertainments," and The Ebb-Tide," co-authored with Lloyd Osbourne; the next volume features "The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables," "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," and "Prince Otto"--frontis. is photo showing Richard Mansfield in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," dated 1908; the last volume extant comprises "The Master of Ballantrae," "Weir of Hermiston," and "Poems." The bindings of all volumes are firm; the paper of fine quality, strong and only mildly age-toned with no foxing; there is some bumping of corners and rubbing at the crowns and feet of the spines, with an occasional scrape or ding; the only ill. are the frontispieces, which are usually reproductions of paintings depicting a scene in one of the stories.
