Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The dust jacket is a little edge worn and scuffed. The Nigerian Civil War broke out in 1967 after the country's Eastern Region declared itself the independent state of Biafra. It lasted for nearly three years. Of the many conflicts and wars that have ravaged Africa this was one of the most hard-fought, and if ever an air war was fought in the shadows, then this was it. The Biafran Air Force was equipped with a motley mix of antiquated and modem aircraft, all obtained through dubious and clandestine channels. For much of the conflict it was overshadowed and outclassed by the Nigerian Air Force, equipped primarily with mercenary-crewed MiG 17s, Il 28s and L-29 Delfins. But Biafra held out, even though for most of the conflict it was landlocked, its only link to the outside world an air bridge to a converted bush airstrip deep in the Biafran heartland. It supported an amazing airlift of food and arms, second only to the Berlin Airlift of 1948. Fusing first hand accounts and much original documentation this is the story of a conflict which the world did not want to happen, but one which the illegal international arms trade wanted never to end. Foreword by Frederick Forsyth. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Condition: very good condition. The result of many years research, Shadows describes fully for the first time the aviation aspects of the Nigerian Civil War. Biafras motley mix of antiquated and modern aircraft was acquired through various dubious and clandestine channels. They faced the Nigerian Air Force, - L-29 Delfins and Ilyushin Il-28s. Despite being land-locked for most of the war Biafra held out, its only link to the outside world being an air bridge to a converted bush airstrip deep in the Biafran heartland. The strip supported an amazing airlift of arms and food - the largest civilian relief airlift in history - which, for almost 18 months kept a nation alive. This book tracks the aircraft and men that took part. A special section traces the intriguing web of British aircraft dealers trying to sell aircraft to the Biafran government - expressly against the wishes of Whitehall. The author has gained access to many confidential files as well as Church and International Red Cross records. - An enticing selection of photographs taken in Biafra and Nigeria, many never previously published, richly illustrate every aspect of the air conflict and inclucles views of Nigerian Air Force MiG-17Fs ancl Jet Provosts and Biafran B-26s, among many other rare pictures. This is the story that has waited 30 years to be told. 288 p. many photos and maps Hardcover with dust jacket, large format.
