About this Item: University of Pennsylvania Press, United States, 2016. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Solomon ibn Verga was one of the victims of the decrees expelling the Jews from Spain and Portugal in the 1490s, and his Shevet Yehudah (The Scepter of Judah, ca. 1520) numbered among the most popular Hebrew books of the sixteenth century. Its title page lured readers and buyers with a promise to relate the terrible events and calamities that afflicted the Jews while in the lands of non-Jewish peoples : blood libels, disputations, conspiracies, evil decrees, expulsions, and more. The book itself preserves collective memories, illuminates a critical and transitional phase in Jewish history, and advances a new vision of European society and government. It reflects a world of renaissance, reformation, and global exploration but also one fraught with crisis for Christian majority and Jewish minority alike. Among the multitudes of Iberian Jewish conversos who had received Christian baptism by the end of the fifteenth century, ibn Verga experienced the destruction of Spanish-Portuguese Jewry just as the Catholic Church began to lose exclusive control over the structures of Western religious life; and he joined other Europeans in reevaluating boundaries and affiliations that shaped their identities. In A Historian in Exile, Jeremy Cohen shows how Shevet Yehudah bridges the divide between the medieval and early modern periods, reflecting a contemporary consciousness that a new order had begun to replace the old. Ibn Verga s text engages this receding past in conversation, Cohen contends; it uses historical narrative to challenge regnant assumptions, to offer new solutions to age-old problems, to call Jews to task for bringing much of the hostility toward them upon themselves, and to chart a viable direction for a people seeking a place to call home in a radically transformed world. About this Item: C. A. Schwetschke & Sohn, Berlin, 1923. EXTREMELY RARE collection of studies on sources and composition of the famous account of 64 persecutions of Jews in different countries throughout the ages called "Scepter of Judah" (Shevet Yehudah), written in Hebrew by an eminent Renaissance Spanish Jewish historian and physician Solomon ibn Verga, first published in 16th-century Turkey. In this book the renowned German-Israeli historian and leading authority on medieval Spanish Jewish history - Fritz [Yitzhak] Baer (1888-1980), an attempt is made to elucidate the historical and literary background of 'Shevet Yehudah', since the work is clearly a compilation of three different authors and is not arranged in chronological order, as well as it's use by Samuel Usque in his "Consolation for the Tribulations of Israel", the only contemporary of Solomon ibn Verga to have made use of the latter's work. 230x155mm. 85 pages. Board rebound Hardcover with cloth spine. Gilt lettering on spine. Cover slightly curved, slightly stained and yellowing/age-stained. Cover edges and corners bumped and worn/peeling. Spine upper edge peeling, bottom edge slightly bumped. Ex-library copy with inscription on spine bottom edge, sticker residue on front cover bottom corner near spine and stamp on whitepage, pre-title-page and pages 13 and 43. Small pen-writing on title-page upper corner near spine. Several first pages edge slightly water-stained. Few pages bottom corner wrinkled. Page 43 upper edge slightly (10mm) torn - NO damage to text. Several pages slightly age-stained. Pages yellowing and wavy. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare monograph on one of the most popular Jewish history books of all time, perhaps the most popular until the 19th century, is in good condition. The book is in : German.
