Hardback. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Machen, Arthur. The Shining Pyramid. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1925. Later revised edition, U.S. issue, bound up from sheets printed in the U.K. Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7-9 [1-012] 13-188 [189] [190: printer's imprint] [191-192: blank]. Original light yellow cloth with printed paper label on spine, top edge stained gray, other edges rough-trimmed, patterned endpapers. Spine label faded to white (from the original purple, a defect nearly inevitable in copies without dust jackets), else a very good copy with unusually clean binding cloth. #1738. $25. Of the eight stories and sketches gathered here, five were present in the volume of the same title published by Covici-McGee in 1923, whereas three ("The Happy Children," "The Secret of the Sangraal" and "The Happy Children") were not: of these three, the first had previously appeared in an anthology, the second -- in a shorter form -- in The Glorious Mystery, as had the third (with a different title). Machen's introductions (to the general collection and to "The Secret of the Sangraal") were written for this edition. Goldstone & Sweetser 31c. The title story was written in the 1890s and strikes the same theme as the material published that decade in The Great God Pan and The Three Impostors for which he is best remembered. Reginald 09468 (citing U.K. issue from Martin Secker).
