Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover without DJ. Dark blue cloth over boards with gold lettering on spine. Rubbing at crown and foot of spine, spine slightly discolored, back cover is speckled with a few small white spots. Spine is very slightly cocked, but binding is still tight. Title page is dated 1929. Copyright is dated 1929. 222 pages. Pages are toned from age. Fore-edge and bottom edge are untrimmed. Faint stain along inner seam of a number of pages, half-title page seam has some darkening from what appears to be pencil lead. Signed and inscribed by the author in blue ink in the top right corner of the first blank page, "With sincere regard, William H. Rowe," dated December 14, 1929. This page also features an inscription in blue ink from a previous owner, "To R.B. Rideout, from J. Paul Rideout, 1928." Overall a nice copy. Condition: Near Fine +. 5 3/8" x 8 1/2", 222 pp., light green cloth with gilt titling to spine and illustrated map endpapers (first map of Casco Bay by Captain Southack in 1718), in illustrated dustjacket. Reprint of the 1929 classic (though this is a superior edition really: the 1929 has issues with binding strength). This copy in Near Fine or better condition: pristine except for a few faint signs of age-toning; otherwise perfect. Jacket is about Very Good (see photo enlarged) with an overall good appearance but with some wear, chipping and tearing along the top and bottom edges; one 1" closed and repaired tear at the bottom of the rear panel. The fascinating story of how Maine came to be known as the Mother of the Wooden Ship, from the earliest days when the Royal Navy used Maine Pine to supply masts for its warships, through the heyday of majestic 3- and 4-masted schooners being launched from the shores of Casco Bay. With 16 b&w plates of ships and shipyards, as well as a frontis depicting the launching of the bark "White Sea" in 1854.
