LAID IN is a customized BOOKPLATE produced by the author to promote the book. It could only be obtained from her. The plate is SIGNED by McKay and dated by her on 5 June 2006, the year of publication. Note: The book is not signed. The image on the 4" X 6" plate is based on an Art Nouveau design and features a drawing of a woman surrounded by babies, and it's printed with Miss Babineau's motto: "Every birth is a lesson." This copy is square and tight with sharp corners, and the jacket is bright and crisp with price intact and protected in an archival sleeve. The top edge of the jacket has softened at the crown of the spine and the folds. The book is bound in maroon cloth with gold lettering. The first printing was 6,500 copies. The first edition went into at least 11 printings. The Birth House was a Top 10 Canadian national bestseller for more than seven months. It was the Canadian Booksellers Association Fiction Book of the Year and McKay was the CBA Author of the Year. Ami McKay was the "New Face of Fiction" from Knopf Canada for 2006. Each year the publisher selects one or more young writers for this distinction. Previous "New Faces" have included Ann-Marie MacDonald, Timothy Taylor, Mary Lawson and Lori Lansens. The New Face of Fiction web address is printed on the bookplate.
