SIGNED hardcover first edition - First printing. The third novel by this award-winning writer. Dave, a 39-year-old ex-hippie has just released from prison, where he'd been sent for not satisfying his IRS obligations and now on parole, is working as caretaker of a large beachhouse near Galveston, Texas - which means he must follow to the letter the late owner's eccentric will and keep her home exactly the same as it was when she died, including making sure that none of her cats escape. Publishers Weekly called this "An unqualified delight." and commented that "No other writer could have made a cogent world out of these disparate entities and a wild group of supporting players which includes cocaine dealers, a teenage runaway, a Christ-mongering probation officer and a lawyer who hates lawyers." INSCRIBED and dated on the title page. 233 pp. Fine in fine dust jacket.

Trade paperback. Condition: Near fine. Uncorrected Proof. Two different proofs for this novel about a man convicted of tax evasion but now out on parole in Texas. One proof measures 5-3/8 by 8-1/4 inches; the other is 6-1/8 by 9-1/4 inches. The shorter version has the tentative publication date of 7/90 on the front cover. Both proofs are near fine, with light edge wear. Both are inscribed by Shiner. Smaller: "For Tom-there aren't many of these-and for good reason! Treasure this abomination-(I don't even have one!) Best, Lewis Shiner 10/12/91." Larger: "For Tom-and now-the correct edition. Lewis Shiner. 10/12/91." Your cataloguer was too lazy to try and figure out what Shiner didn't like about the smaller version.
