Bound in blue cloth boards with illustrated pastedown present to the front board. Boards have shelf-wear and rubbing present to the extremities. Previous owner's name present to the FFEP. Text is free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Long before Richard Scarry or Dr. Seuss, an American artist delighted a generation of children and their parents with hilarious, topsy-turvy illustrations and slightly subversive tales told in rhyme. This was illustrator/author Peter Newell. In The Slant Book, a go cart, a newsboy, and the force of gravity make for a most excellent adventure in a busy American town. As an added bonus, the book is actually set on a slant! ! EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition; First Printing. Quarter cloth and pictorial boards. States, "Patented September 20, 1910" on the front cover as well as the front dust jacket. The copyright page states November, 1910. Another of Newell's unique books, hilariously rendered with many two-color illustrations. All of the illustrations show a baby and carriage running downhill to wonderful effect. The boards are quite bright. There is some insect nibbling about all the board edges. The cloth is unaffected. Several minor finger marks to the margins. There is a former owner inscription to the front free endpaper that is dated Christmas, 1910. Quite a tight copy. The scarce dust jacket is only fair with much chipping and some larger pieces missing about all edges. A 1 3/4" piece missing from the lower spine. Chipping along the flap folds as well. Light, even soiling. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
Condition: Near fine. First edition. First printing of this unusual and delightfully shaped book whose story takes advantage of its angled format, by illustrator and book innovator Peter Newell, a lovely copy. Peter Newell was noted for his "trick books," which incorporated the shape of the book into the story. In a thematically appropriate choice, the book narrates the tale of a baby in a runaway carriage who has all sorts of adventures as his vehicle slides into trouble in his slanted world. A nice copy of a book usually seen in rough shape. 9'' x 7''. Original cloth-backed pictorial boards. Illustrated in shades of brown. [48] pages. Boards with mild rubbing, light bumping to corners. Clean.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Newell, Peter (illustrator). 1st Edition. Newell, Peter. THE SLANT BOOK. New York: Harper & Brothers, [1910], (1910). FIRST EDITION; "Published November, 1910" on title-page verso. 8vo - 8-11/16" x 7". Blue cloth backed color pictorial paper covered boards with minor rubbing to the bottom edges and the upper fore edge corners, and light soiling to the back cover for what is a beautiful copy of the book; the boards (and the entire book) are cut on an angle which augments the downhill action of the book's story and pictures. Plain endpapers. [48] pp. This was the second of Newell's novelty books; the other two being The Hole Book and The Rocket Book. The story, which is told in verse, with text printed on versos, begins with little Bobby's baby carriage breaking away from his Nursemaid and rolling down "a hill so steep and high, 'twould fill the bill for Jack and Jill their famous act to try"; Bobby was extremely delighted with this, the Nursemaid not so much; each text page with a full page color drawing on opposing recto for a total of twenty-two full page drawings by Newell; the text and pictures follow Bobby's adventures as he delightfully rolls down the hill causing havoc all along the way. Internally the book is fine. The condition of the book is NEAR FINE.
