London, [etc.], Saga Publications Ltd., [1999]. x,165 pp. Orig. softcover (pictorial wrappers). 8vo. (Theory, culture & society). [ISBN: 9780761956495]. - As new. This fascinating volume looks at the ambivalence of gift-giving; contemporary gift-giving, its motives, occasions and its rules; examines `sacrifice', `food-sharing' and `gift-giving' as those basic institutions upon which symbolic orders of `traditional' society rely; and considers the historical invention of hospitality, paving the way to an analysis of the anthropology of giving. Berking explores the transition from traditional society to the market self-interest form, sketching a moral economy beyond the rationale of the market-place and a world caught in the grip of competitive possessive individualism. - - Publisher's retail price: 76,--.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This book decodes the ambivalence of gift-giving. It examines its socio-ethical and integrative potential. Following a short recollection of contemporary gift-giving, its motives, occasions and its rules, the reader is invited to travel back in time and space examining 'sacrifice', 'food-sharing', and 'gift giving' as those basic institutions upon which symbolic orders of 'traditional' society rely. The historical invention of hospitality is considered and paves the way to an analysis of the anthropology of giving. Berking goes on to explore the transition from traditional society to the market, self interest form. He questions the view that our societies are dominated by individualism and explores the contemporary interplay between self interest and the common good. In this study Helmut Berking questions the view that contemporary societies are dominated by self-interest, and constructs a moral economy beyond the rationale of the market place. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.
