Signed by the publisher Fasquelle to the edition page. This special edition was signed for the French novelist Lucien Descaves. Signed to the verso of title page to Monsieur Lucien Descaves from Fasquelle. Descaves was one of the "Manifeste des Cinq' authors who, following the initial publication of this work, accused Zola of having deserted the naturalist camp, abandoning his troops and betraying his own oeuvre (Whidden, Seth p.108).In French.Loosely inserted is an inscribed note, by the hand of Descaves in French. The note regards the 'Evenings of Medan' lunch hosted on May 3 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this work. A menu card for the event is also inserted. A portrait of Charles Del Fosse is loosely inserted.With a portrait frontispiece of all six contributors. Paul Alexis has signed above his image.This work contains tales of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, and some critics explain, also tells the tale of the campaign of naturalism. Ce véritable manifeste du Naturalisme que constituent Les Soirées de Médan se compose de six nouvelles, « L'Attaque du moulin » d'Émile Zola, « Sac au dos » de J.-K. Huysmans, « La Saignée » d'Henry Céard, « L'Affaire du grand 7 » de Léon Hennique, « Après la bataille » de Paul Alexis, et bien sûr, « Boule de Suif » de Guy de Maupassant. Qualifiée de chef-d'uvre par Gustave Flaubert, cette nouvelle est tirée d'une anecdote contée à Maupassant par son oncle, Charles Cord'Homme. Plus encore, celui-ci inspire au jeune écrivain Cornudet, le personnage masculin principal de « Boule de Suif ». L'envoi de Maupassant confirme cette influence dans l'hommage qu'il rend à son cousin et confident, Louis-Paul Le Poittevin, beau-fils de Charles Cord'Homme alias Cornudet. Cet envoi est mentionné par Armand Lanoux dans son ouvrage Maupassant le Bel Ami : « Boule de Suif n'est pas sorti de l'imagination du conteur. Le modèle d'Elisabeth Rousset s'appelait Adrienne Legay. Charles Cord'Homme l'avait connue avant 1870. Il s'en défendra plus tard, mais il ne pouvait effacer, entre autres la dédicace faite par Maupassant à ses cousins Louis et Lucie Le Poittevin, ce dernier présenté comme beau-fils de Cornudet lui-même. » Guy de Maupassant séjourna à de nombreuses reprises à La Neuville - la propriété normande des Le Poittevin -, notamment à l'occasion de ses 30 ans en août 1880, quatre mois après la publication des Soirées de Médan. C'est très vraisemblablement lors de cette visite qu'il leur offrit ce recueil. Dans son édition de la Correspondance inédite de Maupassant, Artine Artinian souligne : « Les rapports de Maupassant avec ses cousins Le Poittevin sont ceux d'une ancienne, franche et cordiale amitié. » À l'occasion du mariage de Louis et Lucie en 1869, l'écrivain avait en effet prédit à son cousin : « Je serai si tu veux l'ami de ton ménage. » L'un et l'autre furent de véritables confidents, en témoigne leur correspondance, et en 1884, Maupassant ira jusqu'à vivre quelques temps dans leur hôtel particulier rue Montchanin à Paris. Belle démonstration de l'attachement profond de Maupassant à sa famille maternelle. Muller. L'un des exemplaires du tirage très restreint sur beau vélin teinté, au format in-8 écu, après 65 exemplaires de grand luxe. Exemplaire exceptionnel, provenant de la bibiliothèque d'Eugène Le Senne, avec son ex-libris gravé par Vanteyne, enrichi des documents suivants montés sur onglets : - une importante et très belle lettre autographe, inédite, signée de 5 pp. de Maupassant adressée à Charpentier, son éditeur, en relation avec l'édition illustrée des Soirées de Médan qu'il vient de faire paraître ; miscive virulente, dans laquelle l'auteur de Boule de suif exprime son opposition à la publication de son portrait et exige qu'il soit ôté de tous les exemplaires en stock chez l'éditeur et déposés chez les libraires, sous peine de poursuites judiciaires. Malgré sa réticence maladive à voir diffuser des images de sa personne, Maupassant ne mit finalement pas sa ménace à exécution et l'ouvrage fut diffusé complet des portraits gravés (décharge laissée par la photographie décrite ci-après sur le premier feuillet) ; - une rare photographie originale de Maupassant, en tirage d'époque, montée sur carton (104 x 63 mm) par l'atelier Liébert (un cliché similaire du même photographe, probablement issu de la même scéance de photographie est reproduit en page 155 de l'Album de la Pléiade consacré à Maupassant (la datation de 1880 figurant dans ce volume semblant erronée, la première photographie connue de Maupassant par Carjat datant de fin 1880 - début 1881, la photo de Liébert datant probablement de 1886), photographie ayant servi à l'élaboration du portrait gravé par Desmoulin figurant dans l'ouvrage et faisant l'objet de la vive réclamation faite par Maupassant dans la lettre décrite précédemment) ; - une lettre autographe signée d'une page d'Émile Zola écrite à Médan le 18 octobre 1885 dans laquelle il décline une proposition de collaboration à un journal ; - une lettre autographe signée de 3 pp. de J.-K. Huysmans à un cher ami, datant probablement de 1898 ou 1899 ; - deux lettres autographes signées de Henry Céard, l'une datée de 1897, l'autre de 1919 ; - une lettre autographe signée de Léon Hennique au critique d'art Félix Fénéon ; et - une carte de visite de Jules Brivois, membre de la Société des Bibliophiles Contemporains remerciant son correspondant de lui avoir présenté la précieuse lettre de Maupassant. Eugène Le Senne fut également, membre de la Société des Bibliophiles Contemporains, société fondée en 1889 et dissoute 5 ans plus tard en 1894. Guy de Maupassant exerçait un sévère contrôle sur les productions le représentant. S'il se laissa parfois photographier, il interdit ou contrôla strictement la diffusion des épreuves trouvant, le plus souvent, son image " détestable ". On ne connaît que quatre portraits de Guy de Maupassant dont le plus connu est celui réalisé par Nadar vers 1889. Selon les spécialistes de l'écrivain, ce dernier souffrait d'une phobie de sa propre image. Ce sentiment de dépossession, qu'Honoré de Balzac avait ressenti avant lui, s'exprime d'ailleurs clairement dans ses écrits, et notamment dans Le Horla, où le narrateur ne se voit plus dans son miroir, l'invisible ayant dévoré son reflet.
