Con questo breve saggio, scritto con stile leggero, aneddotico e pervaso da ironia, uno dei più importanti studiosi italiani di antropologia e storia delle religioni fa una carrellata delle superstizioni in voga nel nostro paese. È un libricino che può essere considerato una base di partenza per chiunque voglia approfondire l'argomento. Lo studio delle superstizioni infatti rimane sempre attuale e interessante per comprendere la cultura degli italiani, data la persistenza di certe pratiche nella vita quotidiana. Difatti, come ricorda l'a., le superstizioni appaiono come particolari meccanismi di difesa e di rassicurazione, attraverso i quali individui e gruppi immaginano giustificazioni dei loro fallimenti e delle loro incertezze, e per questo, paradossalmente, se le superstizioni non esistessero, bisognerebbe inventarle per la loro utilità nelle crisi esistenziali. Pur spiegandone la funzione, Di Nola non tende a giustificare le pratiche superstiziose (come vorrebbe una certa antropologia), ma muove una critica graffiante e sistematica sia verso la loro versione contemporanea veicolata dai mass media (come l'astrologia), sia verso la strumentalizzazione che ne fanno le religioni. Il concetto di superstizione viene inteso nella sua accezione più ampia ed è sottolineata, nei molti resoconti, la forte permeabilità tra pratiche religiose, magiche e superstiziose: indagando sulle origini di molte superstizioni (spesso riconducibili alla cultura greco-romana), l'autore fa notare infatti che esse sono state in parte integrate nel cristianesimo o addirittura ne rappresentano di fatto le basi, oppure vengono tollerate perché difficilmente sradicabili, nonostante i numerosi sinodi ad hoc. D'altronde, la pretesa del cristianesimo di ricondurre le religioni pagane nell'alveo della superstizione e di porsi quindi su un piano di superiorità rispetto ad esse, nonostante le pratiche si somiglino, appare alquanto opinabile, almeno per chi abbia un approccio più laico. Non è un caso che l'autore (con una impostazione che piacerà soprattutto ai non credenti e molto meno, riteniamo, ai credenti) dedichi capitoli ad argomenti come il malocchio, la numerologia, i lupi mannari, i vampiri, l'astrologia, ma non esiti a trattare con piglio critico le possessioni demoniache o le apparizioni miracolose. In particolare, Di Nola definisce una delle mitologie più rischiose e originanti una lunga serie di pregiudizi quella connessa al diavolo ed è molto critico sul recupero di questi ultimi decenni attuato dalla teologia cattolica. Per quanto riguarda le apparizioni miracolose, specie quelle mariane, l'autore ne sottolinea la documentata utilizzazione politica. Altro corno della polemica è rappresentato dalle pratiche superstiziose contemporanee, come lo spiritismo o l'astrologia. Di Nola fa notare la pervasiva influenza dei mass media nel riproporre costantemente e senza alcuna analisi critica certe pratiche e fenomeni, fornendo loro legittimità presso il pubblico. L'astrologia odierna, nonostante l'aura di apparentemente metodicità e scientificità, è in sostanza un perfetto mulino, meccanicamente ineccepibile che, però, macina a vuoto, producendo il vuoto. Insomma, questo libro scorrevole e divulgativo scritto da un grande studioso italiano può essere un contributo utile e abbordabile per capire meglio il mondo e la logica della superstizione in Italia.
