This copy does NOT have any library markings. Second Edition corrected and revised. "PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION. THE constantly increasing interest in all phases of evolution has made necessary the preparation of a second edition of this book within a few months after the first appeared. The opportunity has been used to eliminate typographical errors , and to make alterations in the form of a few sentences for the sake of clearness and smoothness. The subject matter remains practically unchanged. An explanatory note has been added on page 575 in order to avoid confusion as to the identity of some of the plants which figure prominently in the experimental investigations in Amsterdam and New York. The portrait which forms the frontispiece is a reproduction of a photograph taken by Professor F. E. Lloyd and Dr. W. A. Cannon during the visit of Professor de Vries at the Desert Botanical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution, at Tucson, Arizona, in June, 1904. D. T. MACDOUGAL. December 15, 1905" (p. xii).

First Edition
Hard Cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Early evolutionary theory: De Vries points out that selection alone does not cause evolution - there must be variation from which to select. Here he discusses Darwin's and Wallace's theories, selection, acquired characteristics, mutation; origin of species in the genus oenothera; in volume 2, he discusses the origin of varieties within a species in plants. De Vries was unaware of Mendel's work until the late 1890s, rediscovering his theories in his own work, but barely mentioning him in these volumes. Two volume set, complete. Hardcover, full red cloth, leather spine labels lost, replaced with paper labels, gilt titling. General wear to books, light staining, some mouse-nibbling to edges of rear boards, minor staining to page edges; spines faded; nice bookplate inside each front cover, different ink name & 'seal' on free endsheet, ink name scrawled across title page: the previous owners were zoologists at the University of Wisconsin. Text clean; 6 color plates, xv, [1], 582, [4]; 6 more color plates, viii, blank leaf, 683 pages; index, list of author's papers (mostly in Dutch) & figures in each volume. Chicago, London, Open Court Publ. Company, Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co., 1905. Orig. full cloth. Titlelabel in leather with gilt lettering. A few faint spots to frontcover. XVIII,847 pp. + Publisher's Cat. (6) pp. Clean and fine. First edition of the English version of De Vries " Theory of mutation" given as 28 lectures at the University of California in 1904. "A perusal of the Lectures will show that the subject matter of "Die Mutationstheorie" (this work was translated in full into English in 1909-10) has been presented in a somewhat condensed form, and that the time which has elapsed since the original was prepared has given the oppurtunity for the acquisition of additional facts, and a re-examination of some of the more importent conclusions with the result that a notable gain has been made in the treatment of some complicated problems." (Editors Foreword). - "New experiments and observations have been added, and a wider choice of the material offered by the more recent current literature has been made in the interest of a clear representation of the leading ideas."(Author's Preface).
