Storms Lyrik, die den Vorbildern E. Mörike, J. von Eichendorff und H. Heine folgt, ist geprägt vom Erlebnis der norddeutschen Landschaft, Unmittelbarkeit des Gefühls, Schlichtheit und großer Musikalität der Sprache: Gedichte wie »Abseits« und »Die Stadt« gehören zu den schönsten deutscher Sprache. Seit etwa 1850 wandte sich Storm verstärkt der Novelle zu (berühmt wurde er mit »Immensee«, 1849), die er als strengste Prosaform und »Schwester des Dramas« ansah; über theoretische Fragen dieser Gattung führte er eine rege Korrespondenz mit Mörike, G. Keller, Fontane und I. S. Turgenjew. Ein zentrales Motiv der 58 Novellen Storms ist die Auseinandersetzung des Einzelnen mit scheinbar unüberwindlichen zwischenmenschlichen Konflikten, dämonischen Kräften, dem Schicksal und der Vergänglichkeit, wobei die Erinnerung und das Erzählen als Mittel fungieren, um die Flüchtigkeit der Zeit zu bewältigen. Die Stadt Husum ist heute noch bekannt als Graue Stadt am Meer, nach einem Gedicht Storms. In Husum und im übrigen Herzogtum Schleswig spielen viele Erzählungen Storms. Zahlreiche öffentliche Einrichtungen in ganz Deutschland, darunter Plätze, Straßen und die Theodor-Storm-Schule Husum, sind nach ihm benannt. Die Theodor-Storm-Gesellschaft hat heute etwa 1.400 Mitglieder, widmet sich der Erforschung seiner Werke und gibt eine eigene wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift (die Schriften der Theodor-Storm-Gesellschaft") heraus.
