Rowohlt hatte Fallada eine Halbtagsbeschäftigung in seinem Verlag verschafft, damit dieser sich ohne größere materielle Sorgen seiner schriftstellerischen Arbeit widmen konnte. So entstand der Roman Kleiner Mann was nun?, der zum Bestseller wurde und Fallada den Durchbruch als Schriftsteller und auch internationale Anerkennung brachte. Den Künstlernamen Hans Fallada wählte er in Anlehnung an zwei Grimmsche Märchen, den glücklosen Hans im Glück und Die Gänsemagd, in der ein Pferd namens Falada vorkommt, das auch nach seinem Tod noch die Wahrheit sagt, bis die betrogene Prinzessin zu ihrem Recht kommt. .
