[LGBTQ] Feinberg, Leslie. Stone Butch Blues. New York: Firebrand Books, 1993. Trade paperback softcover. 304 pages. Measures 5.5" x 8.5". This historical fiction novel is considered a top account of the complexities of the transgender existence. While fictional, it takes inspiration from Feinberg's own life growing up differently gendered in a blue--collar town in the 1950s and coming out as a butch in the bars of the prefeminist 60s. Learning it's easier to pass as a man in order to survive when she is left without work or a community in the early 70s, this powerful, provocative novel explores the complexities of being a transgender person in a world demanding simple explanations. The work is frequently discussed in LGBT communities, as it never shies away from portraying the classism, homophobia, anti-butch animus, and trans-phobia that protagonist Jess Goldberg faced on a daily basis. The novel also shows the healing powers of love and political activism in the LGBT community, and offers a progressive view on transgender culture. The book won the 1994 American Library Association Gay & Lesbian Book Award, now known as the Stonewall Book Award. Very clean cover. Title page features notes in pencil from previous owner about the text, including page numbers and themes, such as: "P. 135, walled off to Ben" and "P. 148, Teresa doesn't want Jess to pass, emotionally walled off can't let herself be touched." Text block is tight. Overall in very good condition.
