Fictional accounts of German student life in three different historical periods center on the relationships among young men and attempts to reconcile the spiritual and the secular This book contains three titles, two of which are incomplete. It starts with the novel fragment, 'Berthold', written in 1907. Berthold appears to be the prototype for his 'Goldmund', some twenty years later. Next comes the completed short story/novella, 'Friends', also written in 1907. The book concludes with two separate versions of the so-called 'Fourth Life'. Anyone who has read 'The Glass Bead Game' will be familiar with the three stories at the end, known as the 'Three Lives'. This additional story was originally intended to be the 'Fourth Life', but it was not completed, and may have been dropped because Hesse considered it too long for that purpose.
