About this Item: E.H. Butler & Co, Philadelphia, 1867. Leather. Condition: Very Good. Schmolze (illustrator). Octavo size, 240 pp. Oliver Goldsmith (ca. 1728-1774) was a man with many sides: a poor student, dissolute gambler, apparently not well regarded by his peers. This volume of his Poetical Works includes "The Deserted Village" written after Goldsmith witnessed the demolition of an ancient village and the destruction of its farms to clear land to become a wealthy man's garden. ___DESCRIPTION: Dark brown leather binding on beveled boards, blind-stamped on the front and back boards in a double, decorative rule, gilt decorations on front and back boards, gilt lettering and decorations on the spine, all edges gilt, dark brown endpapers, eleven tissue-guarded steel engravings. ___CONDITION: Overall very good+, the volume has a strong, square text block, some rubbing to edges and corners, front hinge starting, scattered foxing. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
